An insomniac knows the pain of sleepless tiresome nights and drowsy days. Unfortunately the disease has become prevalent now-a-days and is affecting people from almost all age groups. Medications taken regularly to reduce high blood pressure or treat heart problems might cause insomnia. Anti-allergy drugs are equally responsible for sleeplessness. Those who are taking weight loss or diet pills are prone to get insomniac over a period of time. Decongestants, antihistamine drugs, antibiotics, methamphetamine, ephedrine, fluroquinolone and amphetamines are few other medicines what cause insomnia.


Certain beverages like alcohol and coffee can cause insomnia if consumed right before bedtime. Nicotine and caffeine are considered two main causes of sleep disorder. Change in environment caused due to job shift, high altitude etc can make a person temporarily sleepless. Excessive noise and coldness or hotness inside the bedroom might put off sleep causing insomnia.

Another important reason what causes insomnia is medical problem. Patients of chronic pain or fatigue syndromes are inclined to get insomnia. Acid reflux, hot flushes, angina, congestive heart disorder etc. give rise to critical health conditions that cause insomnia. Acute asthma, Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease and arthritis are other health hazards causing this ailment. Treating these diseases can eradicate insomnia from one’s life permanently.

Pregnant women undergo hormonal shifts what causes insomnia. Sometimes an overactive mind can also held responsible for insomnia and this reason works mostly for adolescent students, women experiencing menopause and also aged people. Drug users are prone to become insomniacs. People working in frequently changing shifts often experience variation in sleeping pattern leading towards insomnia.

Psychological reasons have been identified the commonest cause of insomnia as a result of hectic drudgery of urban life. Stress and anxiety caused by worries, helplessness, uncertainty and fear to lag behind others take away the boon of sleep from many people. Prolonged depression also ruins normal sleeping paradigm. Certain medications and therapies can help resolving this problem permanently enhancing the overall health of an individual.
